1 John 1:5-10
A basic Message from Jesus

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.

1. We must Live in the Light.
This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.

God is Light.  We must be like Him.   But what does that mean.

1 Peter 1:16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”

2.  We can not continue in Darkness
6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.

John 3:21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants

1 Thessalonians 4:3 God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away…

 3. If we live in the Light we have Fellowship
7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

John 13:34-35 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

Romans 13:8 Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.

4. So how do new live in the Light???
8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.

A. We have to understand our problem.
8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.
Our problem is sin

Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

B.We must confess our sins.
9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
To God and each other.

Acts 19:18 Many who became believers confessed their sinful practices. In Context

James 5:16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

C. We must be Honest
10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
We must not think that we are good enough.

Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 5:20 God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.

John 14:15 “If you love me, obey my commandments.

John 14:21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”
